There are many reasons for the popularity of the NFL across the world, from the excitement of the games themselves to the enjoyment of NFL betting - which has developed in countries outside the US since the emergence of online sports gambling. Ultimately, however, it is the great players who have graced the most successful NFL teams over the years that have provided the biggest reason for the ever-growing interest in the game. These are three of the best ever NFL players.
Jim Brown
Although Brown quite the game at the very height of his success as a running back, he is still considered by fans of the game as the player against whom all others in his position must be measured. In the nine years he played professionally, he achieved a rush average of 5.2 yards – 12,312 yards in total – which puts him at the top of the list of all time great rushers. He combined force inside tackles with the kind of pace that left defenders for dead in the secondary.
Jerry Rice
Rice has broken records by the score, scoring the highest number of touchdowns –with 205, receptions – with 1,519 and receiving yards - with 22,466. However outside of these stats, Rice achieved legendary status due to his hard working style, which saw him perform equally well in major and minor games.
Joe Montana
This quarterback represents a more controversial choice, with fans divided on his merits. Some consider him one of the games all-time greats, while others don't even see him as one of the best in his position. However, what Montana did demonstrate throughout his career was the ability to win, even if his style as a quarterback was unorthodox. Ultimately most fans would rate the greatness of a player on the victories he helped his team to – not on how this was managed.
